Taking Care of Yourself

Moving to a new country can be a very daunting experience, but once you've settled in, it'll be one you never forget.

Learn the Language

To really be able to integrate and understand a country and it's culture, it's recommended to learn the language. The Host Family will provide you with a contribution towards your language course to help you get settled in your new home.

Why not give yourself a little head start and learn some basics to impress your new Host Family?

The following can be great to get you started:

Your Health

It's really important to check in with yourself and look after your mental health while you're away from home. You'll be busy with the family and your new friends, but its normal to feel anxious or homesick and its important to make some time for you.

The following can be a great help:

Move Your Body

Take a walk around to get to know your surroundings, put on a YouTube workout or join a gym class to get those feel good hormones flowing.

Meditation

Meditation can be a great way to stop and just see how you're feeling. When you have a day of running around with the children, it can be good to just sit and clear your mind for 10 minutes or so. Meditation also teaches you to be present in the moment, so you can try to savour every part of your Au Pair experience.

Phone a Friend

A lot of the friends you meet while you're away will no doubt be experiencing some of the same emotions as you. Reaching out can be really helpful and can make your friendship even stronger.

Stay Safe

Exploring a new country is a lot of fun, but it's important to remember that the culture can be different and not to let your guard down.

If you have any problems while you're away from home, it's important to speak with your Host Family and also be sure that you are familiar with the emergency services number for your host country.
